Why Designer Molly Britt Added a Foot Pedal to Her Kitchen Sink

How many times have you been cooking or cleaning up in your kitchen and wished you could turn on the sink without touching it (hello greasy fingers and hands full of dishes)? You could swap out your faucet for a smart faucet you can control with your voice, but if you want to work with what you’ve got and just give it a simple upgrade, designer Molly Britt has a genius trick that she uses in her own kitchen: add a foot pedal.

“I recommend it so highly for cleanliness and water conservation,” Britt tells House Beautiful. “I keep the temperature set to hot and use that 95 percent of the time. It also has a feature where you can run the water without standing there, which I like when filling the sink to wash veggies or making a sink full of soapy water to wipe things down.”

Britt says she had her plumber install the foot pedal (which is from Pedal Valves) in her kitchen, but noted that it was very easy to do. Britt’s model is a single pedal that works with any faucet, and according to the Pedal Valves website, you can adjust the default temperature by leaving the faucet open to it, since it won’t run unless you step on it or push the toe button in to latch the pedal open (so it stays running when you’re not standing on it, as Britt mentioned).

If you’re looking to buy a foot pedal for your own kitchen faucet, you can purchase one from Pedal Valves by contacting them directly, or by reaching out to your local kitchen and bath dealer or plumbing supply house. Or, you can look for an alternative online—the one shown above from Chicago Faucets is a similar option, but there are others (both single and double pedal options!) at Home Depot, Build.com, and other retailers. You may want to call a plumber to get an installation quote and make sure you buy the right option for your sink before you purchase, though. Then after that, no hands!
