What Is a Faucet Diverter?

A faucet diverter is a valve that changes the direction of water flow. In a kitchen faucet, it sends water to the side sprayer. In a bathtub faucet, it sends water up to the showerhead instead of out of the tub spout.

Types of Diverters

  • Tub spout diverter: A pull-up knob or lever on the tub spout.
  • Shower valve diverter: A separate handle or knob that switches between tub and shower.
  • Kitchen faucet diverter: Sends water to a side sprayer when the trigger is pressed.

Signs of a Bad Diverter

  • Water comes out of both the tub spout and showerhead
  • The diverter is stuck or hard to move
  • The side sprayer has weak flow
