How to Remove a Stuck Faucet Aerator

A faucet aerator is the small screen at the tip of the spout. It mixes air into the water, reduces splashing, and helps control flow. Over time, mineral deposits can make the aerator stick and hard to remove.

What You Need

  • Adjustable pliers or an aerator key
  • A soft cloth or rubber jar opener
  • White vinegar or a descaling solution
  • Warm water

How to Remove It

  1. Turn off the faucet and close the drain if possible.
  2. Wrap the aerator with a cloth to protect the finish.
  3. Try turning it counterclockwise by hand.
  4. If it is stuck, use adjustable pliers over the cloth and turn gently.
  5. If mineral buildup is severe, soak a cloth in vinegar and wrap it around the aerator for 15–30 minutes.
  6. Turn the aerator again until it comes loose.

After Removal

Soak the aerator in vinegar, brush away debris, and rinse it before reinstalling. Do not overtighten when putting it back.
